Observations of the Crab Nebula and Pulsar with VERITAS

چکیده
Observations of the Crab Nebula have proven to be the best tool to calibrate and to characterize the performance of a Cherenkov telescope. Scientifically, it is interesting to measure the energy spectrum of the Crab Nebula close to the inverse-Compton peak where a deviation is expected from the power law seen at energies above 300 GeV. Additionally, it is important to search for pulsed emission from the Crab Pulsar at energies beyond the 10 GeV upper limit of the EGRET pulsar detection. Since current models predict a cut-off in pulsed emission between 10 and 100 GeV, measurements at energies close to this range may help to discriminate between them. We observed the Crab extensively in the 20062007 season during the VERITAS 2and 3-telescope commissioning phases. Using this data set we reconstructed a preliminary energy spectrum of the signal from the Crab Nebula. We also measured the optical pulsed signal to validate our GPS time-stamping and barycentering techniques and obtained an upper limit for the pulsed emission at gamma-ray energies.

Search for Short Bursts of Gamma Rays Above 100 MeV from the Crab using VERITAS and SGARFACE
The phenomenon of giant radio pulses (GRP) from the Crab Pulsar can be studied at gamma-ray energies using atmospheric-Cherenkov telescopes such as VERITAS and the SGARFACE experiment attached to the Whipple 10 m telescope. Although these instruments are generally used for very-high-energy gamma-ray astronomy above 100 GeV, they also provide substantial sensitivity to short bursts of photons ab...
متن کاملObservations of the Crab Nebula and Its Pulsar in the Far-ultraviolet and in the Optical 1,2
We present far-UV observations of the Crab nebula and its pulsar made with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph onboard the Hubble Space Telescope. Broad, blueshifted absorption arising in the nebula is seen in C IV λ1550, reaching a blueward velocity of ∼ 2500 km s. This can be interpreted as evidence for a fast outer shell surrounding the Crab nebula, and we adopt a spherically symmetric ...
متن کاملSpectral analysis of the Crab Pulsar and Nebula with the Fermi Large Area Telescope
The Crab Pulsar is a relatively young neutron star. The pulsar is the central star in the Crab Nebula, a remnant of the supernova SN 1054, which was observed on Earth in the year 1054. The Crab Pulsar has been extensively observed in the gamma-ray energy band by the Large Area Telescope (LAT), the main instrument onboard the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, during its first months of data takin...
متن کاملA Model for the Moving ‘wisps’ in the Crab Nebula
I propose that the moving ‘wisps’ near the center of the Crab Nebula result from nonlinear KelvinHelmholtz instabilities in the equatorial plane of the shocked pulsar wind. Recent observations suggest that the wisps trace out circular wavefronts in this plane, expanding radially at speeds<∼ c/3. Instabilities could develop if there is sufficient velocity shear between a faster-moving equatorial...
متن کاملChandra Observations of Pulsar B 1509 – 58 and Supernova Remnant G 320
The young and energetic pulsar B1509–58 powers a bright X-ray synchrotron nebula, embedded in the unusual supernova remnant G320.4– 1.2. We present observations of this system with the Chandra X-ray Observatory, which show a spectacularly complicated source. The nebula is dominated by a bright collimated feature which we interpret as a relativistic jet directed along the pulsar spin axis. Sever...
